High Five
2015
steel folding table legs, steel, pine wood
240 cm x 32 cm x 60 cm each
Installation dimensions variable
The sculpture features five elements resembling tall folding tables, standing on their sides with foldable legs suspended in the air. This positioning renders them impractical for their intended use as furniture, creating a tension between function and form. The tables, no longer serving their conventional purpose, transform into imposing partition screens. Surrounding them, salvaged chairs from a nearby school serve as silent stand-ins, further emphasising the transformative nature of the space.
The sculpture is part of a series of works that explore themes of the body, distance, proximity, tension, and the desire for communication, using standard furniture elements as raw material. These include Untitled (Cairo) (2010), Strength (2013), and Idle (2017).
In 2016, High Five was part of Falke Pisano's exhibition The Value in Mathematics at Badischer Kunstverein. It supported a series of diagrams by Pisano, linking multiple issues addressed in the show.
