Model for a Pedagogical Vehicle
2018
Powder-coated steel, castors, fabric, prints mounted on PVC, paper objects
300 x 350 x 465 cm

Conceived for the exhibition bauhaus imaginista: Corresponding With, this multi-layered installation interprets four documentary photographs showing the 1931 Seikatsu Kosei Tenrankai exhibition in Tokyo. The exhibition aimed to introduce Bauhaus ideas and pedagogy to a Japanese audience by combining design principles and preliminary course methods with materials from the Japanese modernist movement and craftsmanship. The installation comprises four steel frames on wheels connected by hinges. Hanging from these frames are reproductions of paper studies from Joseph Albers’ introductory course at the Bauhaus, along with four archive images from the Tokyo exhibition. The cutout areas of the paper studies are transposed as coloured silhouettes on the archive images, creating a link between them. The installation is surrounded by six sculptural textile sculptures inspired by a diagram that can be seen on the ceiling of one of the archive images.
